Victorian Walnut Couch Frame
A Victorian Walnut Couch with carved decoration. This piece came to the workshop requiring complete re building after which the client was going to reupholster the frame herself on a DIY basis. The remains of the couch as seen in this image were stored in a damp outhouse for many years at a relatives home and were in an awful state. It was always going to be a challenge getting this one right at an economical cost but the client really wanted it done.
After removing the upholstery and stripping everything from the frame, the frame itself was part dismantled, all broken joints repaired, reassembled, cramped and glued up. This image shows the frame back rail under some cramps also the rear leg to right hand side was missing and was hand carved to match the original.
The frame now completely restored with new glue blocks to the legs and all ready for upholstery and it’s new home. The show wood was stripped and re french polished as the existing finish was too degraded to save. In the end this turned out to be really successful restoration and the client was over the moon with the finished job.
This image showing the end view of the completed frame and the new hand carved replacement leg to the right hand side – the colour showing darker due to being at the rear of the frame which would not typically get faded by the light. ie I intentionally finished it darker
