I undertake precise repairs to drastically damaged items eg fallen longcase clock cases, total and sympathetic restoration of derelict pieces, minor furniture repairs and repolishing, for clients in the Bristol area and further away if practical.

Repairs to incomplete, split, warped and damaged cabinet frames and panel work. Rectification of warped and twisted doors, table tops, cabinet sections, shelves and partitions. Repairs to chest of drawer runners, stops, drawer beading, drawer sides and split and broken drawer bases. Attention to sticking, jamming and stiff doors and drawers. Replacement drawers made up to match existing. Repairs to cabinet feet, legs and plinths.
CHAIR FRAME REPAIRS
Not all chair frame are as bad as this! Complete rebuilding or minor repairs to antique upholstered chairs frames, legs and feet, repairs to loose and flexing joints from a small occasional chair to a chaise lounge. Knocking apart, cramping and re gluing dining chair frame loose joints. Repair of broken joints and dowels, corner blocks. Repair and replacement of broken or missing rails, stretchers, back splats, arms and most other chair components. Repair to broken drop in seat frames and treatment of woodworm.
Regluing of bubbling and lifting veneer. Repair and replacement of damaged and incomplete stringing, banding and inlay. Repair to damaged, broken, cracked and missing veneer. Complete or part re veneering of surfaces using new or period veneer and traditional scotch glues. Rectification of veneer shrinkage damage.
CLOCK CASE RESTORATION
Minor repairs and total restoration of derelict clock cases (woodwork and refinishing elements only) . Repair of accidental damage including fallen grandfather clock cases. Repairs to veneer and bandings, base panel shrinkage, missing moulding and beading, broken hood doors and pediments, loose back boards and broken hood glazing. Flattening of warped and twisted longcase clock doors.
FRENCH POLISHING AND SURFACE FINISHING
Repair and conservation of original surface finishes. Attention to crazed, flaking and oxidised polished finishes. Chemical bleaching including Nitric Acid, Hydrogen Peroxide and Oxalic Acid (ink mark and black oak stains removal) ageing and distressing. Colour matching and fading. Ebonising. Complete or part refinishing utilising traditional oil and ethanol/ shellac based materials and traditional hand applied methods. Preservation of original patination and colour. Cleaning, reviving, oiling and waxing. Timber matching, colour matching. Complete French polishing of dining table tops and other surfaces or cleaning and reviving of original finishes.
MOULDING AND BEADING
Repairs to broken and missing timber beading or moulding. Making up and supply of replacement hand shaped mouldings and beading in original period timber to match original and existing profiles including cross grain mouldings. Note: Usually only available in conjunction with other restoration work on the same item.
BROKEN MIRROR & GLASS
Replacement of broken cabinet glass with period glass or hand blown glass. Longcase clock hood door glass replacement with old glass. Replacing broken glass in modern furniture with safety glass. Replacement of broken mirror plates. (Please note most glass/ mirror replacement can only be undertaken in conjunction with other work to the same piece – please ring for more info if you have a requirement)
INSURANCE WORK & REMOVAL DAMAGE
Repairs to all antique and some modern furniture which has suffered removal or accidental damage. Broken legs, rails, desk flaps and other damaged components, attention to polished finish damage. Please note I do not undertake spray finishing or touching up modern furniture on site or repairs to upholstery fabric, leather or springing. I can undertake work for Insurance Companies and Loss Adjusters and can produce written quotations subject to a £50.00 fee refundable should the work go ahead.
MODERN FURNITURE REPAIRS
Complete stripping and refinishing by hand of more modern furniture ie 1930’s and 1950’s oak pieces. Desks, tables, chairs, chests of drawers. These items usually restore really well with removal of the usually horrible existing cloudy and dark finishes exposing beautiful grain patterns. Pieces can be finished to a satin or semi matt hand applied finish with choice of natural, light oak. medium or dark oak shades. Most repairs also undertaken to these type of pieces many of which were superbly constructed when new and are well worth saving.
